Sunshine in a Cup
Last summer, my grandmotherโs garden was a riot of color โ rows of basil, mint, and lemongrass framed by the fiery glow of marigolds she lovingly called her โsunshine flowers.โ Every morning, sheโd pluck a few, humming as she arranged them in a chipped porcelain vase by the kitchen window, their scent mingling with the faint sweetness of drying herbs.
Then, one humid afternoon, I lost my voice to a stubborn sore throat. Without hesitation, she disappeared into the garden, returning with a handful of marigold petals, a fresh lemon, and a jar of honey. โNatureโs pharmacy, child,โ she said with a knowing smile, as she steeped everything in hot water. The kitchen filled with a golden fragranceโearthy, citrusy, and warm.
That first sip was magic: smooth, floral, and deeply comforting, like sunlight in a cup. It soothed more than my throat; it calmed something restless inside me. Since that day, Iโve carried on her ritualโa simple marigold, lemon, and honey tea that tastes like memory, healing, and home all at once.
