Lemon balm does not have good marketing. This is its primary failing. It doesn’t have the name recognition of chamomile, the romantic reputation of lavender, or the dramatic credentials of valerian root. It is, in the botanical world, the reliable middle child โ€” consistently competent, frequently overlooked, mildly annoyed about both.

Which is a shame, because lemon balm โ€” Melissa officinalis, if you want to be formal about it โ€” has one of the more solid evidence bases of any calming herb. Studies have shown it reduces anxiety scores measurably, improves sleep quality in people with mild insomnia, and does so without the grogginess that heavier sedatives produce. It belongs to the mint family, which explains its clean, slightly citrusy aroma and the fact that it pairs with almost everything.

Stevia here is not an afterthought. Unlike processed sugar or even honey, stevia does not spike insulin, making this an ideal choice for those who want a slightly sweet bedtime tea without the metabolic interruption. It is also, for what it’s worth, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar โ€” so use less than you think.

Ingredients :

  • 2 tsp dried lemon balm leaves (or a small handful of fresh)
  • 1-2 drops liquid stevia (or ยผ tsp powdered stevia) โ€” adjust to taste
  • 250ml water, just off the boil (90ยฐC)
  • Optional: 3-4 fresh mint leaves, for brightness
  • Optional: thin slice of lemon

Steps :

  1. If using fresh lemon balm, bruise the leaves gently between your fingers before steeping. This releases the volatile oils โ€” the part actually responsible for the calming effect.
  2. Place lemon balm (and mint, if using) in your infuser. Pour 90ยฐC water over them.
  3. Cover and steep for 5-7 minutes. Lemon balm is more forgiving than lavender โ€” a longer steep increases potency without unpleasant bitterness.
  4. Strain. Add stevia drops โ€” start with one, taste, add more only if needed. It is much easier to add sweetness than to remove it.
  5. Add a slice of lemon if using. It brightens the flavour and adds a small amount of vitamin C.
  6. Drink 45 minutes before bed. It works best with consistency โ€” three to four nights in a row before you judge whether it’s helping.

Pro Tip :

Lemon balm is one of the easiest herbs to grow at home โ€” in a pot on a windowsill or balcony. It spreads aggressively if planted in open ground (a mint-family trait), so keep it contained.

A medium pot on a sunny windowsill will give you a continuous supply of fresh leaves through the warmer months, and fresh lemon balm is noticeably more fragrant and potent than dried. If you’re going to commit to any herbal tea regularly, growing the herb yourself is the most honest version of the commitment.
